The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines “at risk” as the following:
- Those 65 and older
- Residents of nursing homes and long term care facilities
- Adults and children with chronic heart and lung problems including asthma
- Adults and children with metabolic diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease, anemia, or other blood disorders
- Adults and children with decreased immunity resulting from cancer, organ transplant, HIV/AIDS, or from drugs and treatments which weaken the immunity system
- Children and adolescents, 6 months to 18 years of age, who are receiving long term aspirin therapy
- Women who will be pregnant during the flu season
- Healthy children, 6 - 23 months of age, and close contacts of children 0 - 23 months of age
