As the old saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Although we can’t live in a plastic bubble (nor should we), we can take preventative measures to minimize chances of catching either the common cold or the flu.
Let’s first understand how the cold and flu are spread. Contrary to popular belief, the common cold and the flu are not caused by exposing ourselves to the cold air, but rather by viruses transmitted through physical contact such as touching and kissing.
Now don’t go running out into the cold without proper protection. An improperly dressed individual can lower their resistance to the point it becomes easier to catch a cold or the flu!
Since most of us are prone to more touching than kissing, we’ll focus on that aspect of prevention. Just about everything we do each day involves touching. Whether it’s making a cup of coffee, picking up a pencil, or using a keyboard, we touch, touch, touch. And don’t even think of wearing those plastic gloves... they also can carry, harbor, grow, and transmit cold and flu viruses.
Cold and flu viruses are generally transmitted to our system by touching our eyes, nose, or mouth with an infected hand or through the air on small droplets of infected water expelled by an infected person through a sneeze or cough.
To minimize your chances of catching one of these “bugs,” the Here’s Health Researh Center has listed another of preventative measures which may help ward off flus and colds.
