Many tend to lump all forgetfulness episodes into one ball of wax called Alzheimer’s. But that’s a big mistake! There are a number of things which may prompt us into making a hasty conclusion.
If you believe your loved one or friend is forgetting a lot lately, consider sitting down and having a little chat. Do their thoughts seem confused? Is it harder for them to accomplish regular activities? Some of these things may be just signs of normal aging. But others may be related to a health problem.
Use the following chart below to compare signs of normal aging with difficulties that may mean something more is happening.
Normal Aging
Something More
Periodic forgetfulness
Increasing problems with short-term memory that interfere with daily functioning
Forgetting where you left your car keys
Forgetting what car keys are used for
Forgetting a friend's birthday
Difficulty recognizing the friend
Occasionally misplacing items
Putting things in strange places (for example, placing an iron in the refrigerator)
When you believe items in the second column begin occurring with a loved one or friend, it may be time for a Doctor’s visit! A qualified doctor may determine it’s not your worst fear (Alzheimer’s), but something other such as normal wear and tear. Regardless what your doctor finds, a prompt diagnosis can lead to remedial actions.
